Advising Notes for the Calculus Sequence:
AP Credit:
- If a student earns a 4 or 5 on the Calculus AB exam, then they receive credit for MTH 111 and they are ready to take MTH 112.
- If a student earns a 3 or lower on the Calculus AB exam, then they may take MTH 111. A motivated student should still consider taking MTH 112, but they should talk to their advisor, and possibly the math dept. chair, to decide if that is appropriate.
- If a student earns a 4 or 5 on the Calculus BC exam, then they receive credit for the MTH 112 and should enroll in the MTH 113.
- If a student earns a 3 on the Calculus BC exam, then they will receive credit for MTH 11 and they should take MTH 112. They may not enroll in MTH 111.
- If a student earns a 2 or lower on the Calculus BC exam, then they should also receive an AB subscore that can be used as described above.
- Students may earn A.P. credit for either MTH 111 or MTH 112, but not both.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Students with AP experience, but no AP credit, are encouraged to consider taking MTH 112, but do not have to get the department chair’s permission to enroll in MTH 111.
Transition from the Old Calculus Sequence
Students who entered Wake Forest before Fall 2006 might be affected by this change.
Old Calculus Sequence: MTH 106, 111, 112, 113
New Calculus Sequence: MTH 111, 112, 113
Brief summary of changes: We have changed from a four semester sequence to a three semester sequence. The new MTH 111 is now a first course in calculus that starts right at the beginning. It is similar to the old MTH 106. The new MTH 112 combines topics from the old MTH 111 and 112. Several topics from the old MTH 112 have been moved to the new MTH 113 in order to make this work. The new MTH 113 is very similar to the old MTH 113, but it is now a four hour course.
AP Credit:
- Students with a score of 4 or 5 on the AB exam, or a 3 on the BC exam, received credit for MTH 555.
- Students with a score of 4 or 5 on the BC exam received credit for the old MTH 111. If they earned a 2 or lower, then they should have also an AB subscore that would be used as described above.
Notes on MTH 555:
- MTH 555 does not count for divisional credit. It does count as elective credit.
- MTH 555 satisfies the calculus requirement for the Calloway Business School.
- Students may not receive credit for both MTH 111 and MTH 555.
- Students may receive credit for both MTH 555 and MTH 112, but in this case they will earn the MTH 555 credit via AP and the MTH 112 credit by taking it at Wake Forest.
Continuing from Old to New:
- If a student has completed the old MTH 106, then they are ready for the new MTH 112. They may not take the new MTH 111.
- If a student has completed the old MTH 111, then they are ready for the new MTH 112, or possibly the new MTH 113. The down side of skipping to MTH 113 is that they have not studied sequences and series. Sequences and series are not a prerequisite for MTH 113, but they are used in more advanced math and science courses. We can help the student make an appropriate choice.
- If a student has completed the old MTH 112, then they are ready for the new MTH 113.
Grade Replacement:
- If a student wants to replace a low grade in the old MTH 106, then they should take the new MTH 111.
- If a student wants to replace a low grade in the old MTH 111, then they should take the new MTH 112.
- If a student wants to replace a low grade in the old MTH 112, then they should take the new MTH 112.
- If a student wants to replace a low grade in the old MTH 113, then they should take the new MTH 113.
