New: Contest Website

Dear Mathematics Teacher:

We are pleased to announce that Wake Forest University is a site for the Algebra I and Geometry Regional Tests of the Annual State High School Mathematics Contest. Your school is invited to participate in Wake Forest’s 2012  Algebra I and Geometry Contests to be held on Saturday, April 14, from 9:30 a.m. to approximately 2:30 p.m.  The top 10% scorers on each test will move on to participate in the State Finals. Top Finishers in the State Finals will be honored at the State Contest in April.

The top three finishers in each division will receive a plaque, the top 10% scorers in each division will receive a certificate of merit, and all participants will receive a certificate of participation. In addition, the top school in each division will receive a plaque.

Rules for entering our contest are as follows:

  1. A student’s eligibility to compete in the Algebra I and Geometry Division is determined by the NCCTM State Mathematics Contest “Rules of Eligibility.” (See Rules.)
  2. Each school may register one team per division. Each team may have up to four members. Openings for additional teams will likely become available after we have heard from all participating schools by March 10. In Year 2011, we were able to accept all eligible students. We can accept up to 160 contestants.
  3. Each contestant must be part of a school team.
  4. The entrance fee is $10.00 per team per division to assist with costs. (Registration Form.)

The test will emphasize material from the Algebra I and Geometry curricula. It is assumed that all contestants will encounter some new concepts and skills during the test, and that their ability to deal with the unfamiliar is part of this measure of their talent. Both speed and technical proficiency will be factors on this test. Students will be allowed to use handheld calculators (SAT Approved) on the test, and should bring their own calculator if they choose to use it.

We believe that this activity will be both challenging and rewarding for your top mathematics students. If you would like to enter a team from your school for either contest of both, please complete the enclosed form and return it to us by March 11.

           Sincerely,

           Miaohua Jiang                                                     David Wilson
