"Applied Numerical Linear Algebra", Fall 2007
Staff
Lectures
The class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 to 10:45am in
Manchester 124.
Prerequisites and Course Motivation
Calculus.
Beginning knowledge of linear algebra. Some beginning programming
experience is needed.
Matlab will be used for the computer projects. Prior
experience in using Matlab is not a prerequisite.
Practical applications of linear algebra will be emphasised.
Course Text
- L. Trefethen and D. Bau, Numerical Linear Algebra
, SIAM Press, latest edition.
Problem Sets, Exams & Grading
There will be 3 problem sets (mostly computer projects), informal homework,
a midterm
(written), and a final exam (comprehensive).
Homework effort will be used to resolve marginal grade cases.
Course grades will be determined
using the following weighting: Projects and Problem Sets - 3 at
10% each, Midterm - 30%, and Final
